Four U.S. Crews Advance to Finals at Henley Royal Regatta

July 02, 2011

HENLEY-ON-THAMES, England – Four United States crews advanced to the final round of the Henley Royal Regatta today while four others were eliminated from competition.

The women’s single sculls, women’s B quadruple sculls, men’s four and women’s eight will all race for championships in the famous British regatta.

The men’s double sculls, women’s A quadruple sculls, men’s quadruple sculls and men’s eight were eliminated Saturday in the head-to-head, single elimination format.

“It was a good day, lots of tough racing,” said head women’s coach Tom Terhaar. “Only our A quad missed the final by a length to Australia, who set the course record. Our B quad had a great race, coming from behind to qualify for the final. The eight also had a solid race,” he said. “Everyone is racing well and we look forward to Sunday's finals.”

The reigning Olympic and five-time world champion American crew of Mary Whipple (Orangevale, Calif.), Taylor Ritzel (Larkspur, Colo.), Meghan Musnicki (Naples N.Y.), Susan Francia (Abington, Pa.), Jamie Redman (Spokane, Wash.), Caroline Lind (Greensboro, N.C.), Kady Glessner (Seattle Wash.), Amanda Polk (Pittsburgh, Pa) and Erin Cafaro (Modesto, Calif.) easily defeated the Leander Club and Reading University entry by more than four lengths of open water.

The USRowing Princeton Training Center team will square off for the Remenham Challenge Cup against the slightly revamped British eight, a crew that finished fourth at worlds and is rowing as the entry from the Leander Club and Thames Rowing Club.

Joining the women’s eight in the final round tomorrow will be Gevvie Stone (Newton, Mass.), who won her race convincingly over Femke Dekker of The Netherlands. She will face Mirka Knapkova of the Czech Republic, who finished fourth at last year’s world championships.

The women’s team also advanced the B quadruple sculls entry of Caryn Davies (Ithaca, N.Y.), Kara Kohler (Clayton, Calif.), Eleanor Logan (Boothbay Harbor, Maine) and Esther Lofgren (Newport Beach, Calif.), that defeated the A entry from the Australian Institute of Sport.

They will race the Australian Institute of Sport B, which eliminated the Princeton Training Center A boat of Ali Cox (Turlock, Calif.), Natalie Dell (Clearville, Pa.), Megan Kalmoe (St. Croix Falls, Wis.) and Stesha Carle (Long Beach, Calif.).

In the men’s four, the crew of Scott Gault (Piedmont, Calif.), Charlie Cole (New Canaan, Conn.), Brett Newlin (Riverton, Wyo.) and Giuseppe Lanzone (Annandale, Va.) won its semifinal match in the Stewards’ Challenge Cup by three-quarters of a boat length over the Australian Institute of Sport’s A boat. They will now face the British crew from Leander Club and Molesey Boat Club.

Racing for the Queen Mother Challenge Cup, the men’s quadruple sculls team of Jamie Koven (Green Village, N.J.), Warren Anderson (Paso Robles, Calif.), Wes Piermarini (West Brookfield, Mass.) and Elliot Hovey (Manchester-By-The-Sea, Mass.) were defeated by the British crew from Leander Club and Reading University.

In the men’s eight, the USRowing Chula Vista Training Center’s crew of Ned DelGuercio (Media, Pa.), Nareg Guregian (North Hills, Calif.), Josh Inman (Hillsboro, Ore.), Steven Coppola (Buffalo, N.Y.), Dan Walsh (Norwalk, Conn.), Henrik Rummel (Pittsford, N.Y.), Alex Osbourne (Sherman Oaks, Calif.), Ross James (DeKalb, Ill.) and Grant James (DeKalb, Ill.) were eliminated by the reigning world champion German eight and lost their bid for the Grand Challenge Cup by three-quarters of a boat length.

In the men’s double sculls, Glenn Ochal (Philadelphia, Pa) and Will Miller (Duxbury, Mass.) lost in their bid for the Double Sculls Challenge Cup after losing to the 2010 world champion silver medalist team of Great Britain’s Matthew Wells and Marcus Bateman.
