U.S. Men’s Pair Wins at Henley

HENLEY-ON-THAMES, England – The United States got off to a solid start this morning with the men’s pair entry of Tom Peszek (Farmington Hills, Mich.) and Justin Stangel (Madison, Wis.), leading the team of nine entries with a convincing win at the Henley Royal Regatta.

Peszek and Stangel went up against Javier and Diego Aquirregomezcorta of Spain and defeated them by over two lengths of open water. In the head-to-head racing format of Henley, the Spanish team was eliminated from the competition.

The U.S. has nine crews entered from the men’s Chula Vista Training Center and the women’s Princeton Training Center and will feature racing in the women’s single sculls, men’s double sculls, men’s and women’s quadruple sculls, men’s pair, men’s four and men’s and women’s eights.

The pair was the only U.S. boat to race Thursday. All other crews, with the exception of the men’s eight will begin racing Friday in quarterfinal duels.
