Final Youth Nationals Qualifier Set to Take Place this Weekend

The road to the 2019 USRowing Youth National Championships is nearing a close as 11 of the 12 qualification regattas are now in the books. This week, crews at the New England Interscholastic Rowing Championships will get their opportunity to race for the final spots in the national championships and join the more than 475 boats that have already qualified to race at Nathan Benderson Park.
Set to be held Saturday, May 25, on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass., the NEIRA Championships will see 297 crews from 62 New England schools competing for the eight final slots at the national championships. With eight crews each, Brooks School, Buckingham Browne & Nichols, Choate Rosemary Hall, Deerfield Academy, Duxbury Bay Maritime, Groton, Middlesex, Noble & Greenough, Northfield Mount Hermon, St. Mark’s and the Taft School lead the entry count.
Across three regattas this past weekend, 162 crews earned their spots in the 2019 USRowing Youth National Championships.
In Lowell, Mass., Greenwich Crew took home the men’s, women’s, novice and overall points trophies at the USRowing Northeast Youth Regional Championships, while qualifying seven boats. New Canaan High School Crew took home the sculling points trophy from the Merrimack River, qualifying four crews for the championships. Narragansett Boat Club earned the largest number of spots for the championships, qualifying eight boats.
Bringing home the men’s points trophy from the USRowing Northwest Youth Regional Championships in Vancouver, Wash., Seattle Rowing Center qualified 10 crews for the national championships. Holy Names Academy brought home the overall and women’s points trophies from Vancouver Lake, qualifying five crews for the championships.
At the 2019 Midwest Youth Championships on Lake Harsha in Bethel, Ohio, both Y Quad Cities and Cincinnati Junior Rowing Club qualified seven crews for the national championships. The Chicago Rowing Foundation, St. Louis Rowing Club and Camp Randall all qualified five crews at the regatta.
Now in its 25th year, the 2019 USRowing Youth National Championships will be held June 6-9 at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Fla. Athletes must qualify for the event through one of 12 qualification regattas. Click here for more information on the event.
