Regatta Spotlight: Peak City Erg Sprints
By Jules Zane • March 7, 2019
Some of rowing’s most popular regattas date back over a century, but they all started somewhere. This week’s featured regatta is a new event, the Peak City Erg Sprints hosted by Jordan Lake Rowing Club. The USRowing-sanctioned indoor regatta will be held Sunday, March 9, at CrossFit Surmount in Apex, N.C., and the competition is free!
“As a three-year-old club, Jordan Lake Rowing Club has experienced many firsts, but to date, we had not yet tried our hand at hosting our own erg sprints event,” said club co-founder and team manager Heidi Walker. “Our winter training partnership with CrossFit Surmount and the willingness of our equipment manager, Glenn Willis, to give it a go changed that and the inaugural Peak City Erg Sprints were born.”
It turns out that starting an indoor event isn’t an impossible challenge.
“It has been great to work with USRowing and Regatta Central to learn what is needed to host an indoor regatta,” Walker said. “The Concept2 software has been very easy to set up, and after a couple of test runs, we are ready to go. We have benefited so much from the hospitality of so many other rowing clubs in our region and beyond, with both indoor and outdoor regattas. We realized that for every club, there is always that first event that goes on to become an annual event and adds to the rowing calendar in each region.”
The club to taking a few steps to try and encourage as much participation as possible.
“The event is free this year and open to all ages and experience levels,” Walker said. “We hope that after this first trial-run, Peak City Erg Sprints will become a regular feature on our region’s winter calendar.”
Jordan Lake Rowing Club anticipates approximately 50 participants to take part in its inaugural event including CrossFit Surmount members and a couple of participants from Charlotte Youth Rowing. For more information about the event, click here. You can visit or register on Regatta Central.
