Regatta Spotlight: St. Valentine’s Day Regatta
By Jules Zane • February 6, 2019
On Saturday, February 9, Pelham Community Rowing Association will be hosting its historic annual indoor regatta, the St. Valentine’s Day Regatta. Set to be held at the Mount Saint Michael Academy gymnasium, St. Valentine’s is this week’s featured regatta.
“The event this year will be held at Mount Saint Michael’s Academy in the Bronx. We are excited that they are helping PCRA host this year’s event in a large gym that will help all of our entrants get the best racing experience possible,” said PCRA Director of Youth Rowing, Justin Stangel.
The venue in the Bronx is the regatta’s third location across more than three decades of racing.
“The year following the first C.R.A.S.H.-B. event in Cambridge, Vincent Ventura, New York Athletic Club head coach, ran the inaugural St. Valentine’s Day Massacre on February 12, 1983, in the small confines of the NYAC John J. Sulger Boathouse,” Stangel said. “NYAC hosted the event there until 2011, when the regatta had really outgrown its space.
“In 2012, NYAC partnered with Pelham Community Rowing Association and Concept 2, and the regatta moved to the gymnasium of the Pelham Middle School. It is one of a handful of World Rowing Indoor Championship qualifying regattas in the country, with the proud tradition of being the second longest running indoor rowing competition.”
If you are interested in competing, there is still time to register.
“Walk-in registration is an option, with racing kicking off at 10:00 a.m. and wrapping up by 2:00 p.m. With the warm temperatures this week, we are already looking forward to getting back on the water soon, but PCRA is excited to see all the athletes from the New York City and Westchester area, and beyond, compete in this historic event,” Stangel said.
