Athletes Gearing Up for CanAmMex Racing

Athletes from USRowing’s U19 camps arrived in Mexico City on July 7 for this year’s CanAmMex to practice alongside crews from Canada and Mexico. The three countries have come together for the collaborative camp in which practice will run July 8-12 and will conclude with a regatta on July 13-14.

“The CanAmMex Regatta serves two purposes,” said USRowing Under 19 National Team Development Coach Steve Hargis. “First, it brings together each country’s top developmental junior athletes, coxswains and coaches for friendly, yet high-level competition. Secondly, this regatta provides a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for its participants to represent their respective countries and also serves as a cultural experience.”

After several days of training, lineups will be solidified by the end of July 12. The event will feature the opening flag ceremony, which will take place at 8:45 a.m. CDT on July 13, followed by 2,000-meter racing in 12 events including the men’s and women’s single sculls, double sculls, pair, four, eight and quadruple sculls, with competitors coming out of phase two of the high performance camp. The women’s and men’s teams each selected 12 rowers and one coxswain from their respective camps to send to Mexico City, after the athletes racing at the 2018 World Rowing Junior Championships were determined.

“For many, CanAmMex will be an important step in development towards further U19, U23 and senior national team opportunities,” said Hargis. “All of these athletes are age-eligible, so all are able to return as part of next year’s selection camps and compete for seats on the world’s team going to Japan.”
