Texas Clubs Looking for Help After Weekend Trailer Accident
By Maeve Berry • June 25, 2018
An unfortunate accident has left the club rowing team at University of Texas without a trailer, several sets of oars and three boats, and Austin Rowing Club without its top five racing shells.
On June 22, the trailer was en route to Oklahoma City for the Stars and Stripes Regatta when it caught fire. Three boats, oars and the trailer belonging to Texas Crew were destroyed in the accident, as well as five Austin Rowing Club boats. Thankfully, no one was hurt in the accident.
“It’s absolutely heartbreaking”, said Texas Crew Vice President Samantha Morey. “The equipment we lost had been purchased from years of saving up from membership dues and donations.”
On behalf of Texas Crew, President David Garza is asking the community to help by supporting Texas Crew Foundation, the team’s non-profit alumni association and main source of funding, as it raises funds to replace the lost equipment.
“We’re hoping to get everything replaced as quickly as possible to prepare for the fall season, so any and all donations are greatly appreciated,” Morey said.
Austin Rowing Club also has set up a GoFundMe page to raise money to help replace its equipment. ARC President Nicole Goad is asking for help in rebuilding their fleet.
