Regatta Spotlight: Mercer Indoor Row for the Cure

Looking to support a great cause and win a unique trophy? This weekend’s Mercer Indoor Row for the Cure is our Registered Regatta of the Week. The event will be held Sunday, March, 11 at the Peddie School in Hightstown, N.J.

“We are very grateful for the Peddie School hosting us at their athletic center,” said Hilary Gehman of the Princeton National Rowing Association and Mercer Rowing. “It’s the same venue and set-up as last year, but we are offering a few additional events. There are lightweight junior categories now, and we added a 500-meter sprint event. The latter is our big addition for this year, hopefully attracting athletes who don’t want to take on the full 2,000.”

Row for the Cure regattas are held nationwide and are supported through a partnership with USRowing. All proceeds benefit local affiliates of the Susan G. Komen Foundation, the largest breast cancer foundation in the United States. Mercer Indoor supports the Susan G. Komen Central and South Jersey chapter and is currently the only Row for the Cure regatta held indoors.

“Our goal is to continue to grow, both this year and in the future,” Gehman said. “We love the venue and just want to get the word out. The event has been primarily for local youth rowers, but we are offering masters events and would love to see collegiate rowers join us as well.”

The regatta starts at 9 a.m. EDT this Sunday, and the final scheduled event concludes shortly after 1 p.m. “It’s the morning after the clock changes for Daylight Savings Time, so we are crossing our fingers everyone will be at their races on time,” Gehman said.

Oh, and that unique trophy? Winners at the Mercer Indoor Row for the Cure event go home with a pink hammer, to commemorate both a job well done and the cause the regatta supports.

Registration is still open. You can sign up via the event page on Regatta Central. Walking up the morning of the event is possible, but registration online is preferred. Spectators are welcome!
