FIT Takes the Top – Washington and Bates Hold in Week 5 Poll

PRINCETON, N.J. — The No. 1-ranked University of Washington women’s crew won two out of the four races against No. 2-ranked University of California, Berkeley at the 106th Annual Cal Dual to remain at the top of the Division I program in week five of the USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Division I, II and III Polls presented by Pocock Racing Shells.

In the main event, Washington led the first 500 meters, with Cal taking the lead at the 1000m mark and advancing all the way through the finish.

Washington led the polls with 20 first-place votes, followed by Cal with five first-place votes. Moving up from fifth-place was the University of Texas in third. The University of Michigan and the Ohio State University rounded out the top five.

The Florida Institute of Technology has been off from racing and gearing up for Friday’s Sunshine State Conference Championship at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Fla., but still had the lead in the DII poll securing three first-place votes.

Also off last weekend was second-place Western Washington University who earned two first-place votes. The Vikings will travel to Gold River, Calif. this weekend for the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championship.

The University of Central Oklahoma was third. University of California, San Diego and Humboldt State University, who will both be racing at the WIRA Championship, completed the top five.

Bates College once again held the top position in the DIII poll after coasting to a 10-0 record, winning all six women’s races at the 21st President’s Cup Regatta on their home course.

Following in second place was Wesleyan University who swept the Varsity 8 and 3rd Varsity 8 against Williams College on Saturday. Tufts University was third. Williams College and Ithaca College were fourth and fifth.
