“My coxswain…………..” How would you
fill in the blank?
In honor of coxswains across the country, from novice to elite, join us for a new annual tradition. Coxswain Appreciation Week
will be held April 28-May 4, 2014. Who better to serve as Honorary Co-Chairs than U.S. Olympic gold medal men’s and women’s eights coxswains Peter Cipollone and Mary Whipple?
“Coxswain Appreciation Week was the brainchild of Bobbie McKenna, a rower at Drexel University. She decided, along with her team, to honor Drexel coxswains the first week of May,” said Beth Kohl, Chief Marketing Officer of USRowing
. “Bobbie proposed making it a national celebration. We loved the idea and are looking forward to getting to know the coxswain community better next week and recognizing those who play such a vital role in our sport.”
“Fast teams and healthy teams are often pretty selfless and for Drexel to take a week to appreciate the often overlooked position of the coxswain seat means they have a solid foundation for a healthy team culture," said Whipple. “Coxswains are the voice of the team and the direct reflection of the team’s attitude. Every seat in a team boat needs to know that their actions matter to the success of the team because that produces ‘easy speed’ to build upon.”
USRowing wants to learn more about your coxswains! Join us next week in recognizing a special coxswain.
Like and follow USRowing on Facebook and Twitter and @usrowingngb on Instagram. Tag your photos/messages with #coxieappreciation. Winners will be selected from photos/messages posted April 28- May 4.
Pete will do a video tutorial/Q&A via InstaViser.com with the winner and coxswain referenced in the post “My coxswain went above and beyond.”
Mary will send t-shirts from her coxswain clinic and summer camp program, the 9th Seat, for winners of the following posts:
- Coxswain toss picture
- Story of how a coxswain made the win or where their words equaled speed
“For many reasons, I think the world of rowing needs a Coxswain Appreciation Week – a week in which we remind our favorite little buddies how much we love them, how much we appreciate them and how much we realize we couldn’t do this sport without them,” said McKenna. “Even if it's just a kind word, a card, an Instagram post, anything can make someone’s day better. Sometimes we all need reminders. Thank you coxies! We love you!”
