Tuesday Race Preview: Second Chance Time

BLED, Slovenia – With all heats completed, nine United States crews will get a second chance to advance in their events Tuesday at the 2011 World Rowing Championships on Lake Bled.
Racing begins at 9:30 a.m. local time with the adaptive divisions. Up first is Tricia Downing (Denver, Colo.), rowing the arms and shoulders women’s single sculls. She will face China, Portugal, Israel and Belarus. Of those crews, Portugal rowed the fastest time in the heats Monday morning. The top three crews will advance to the semifinal Wednesday.
Ron Harvey (Downingtown, Pa.), rowing in the arms and shoulders men’s single sculls is next and will race China, Portugal, Israel and Belarus. Harvey had the fourth-best time of the three heats Monday, followed by Belarus. The first two boats will advance to the Thursday semifinal.
Following Harvey is the trunk and arms mixed double sculls team of Anthony Davis (La Center, Wash.) and Jacqui Kapinowski (Point Pleasant, N.J.). They will race Slovenia, Australia, Great Britain and Poland. Australia and Great Britain both recorded faster times in the heats. Two boats will advance to the semifinals Friday.
The legs/trunk/arms mixed four with coxswain team of coxswain Alex Stein (Stamford, Conn.), Eleni Englert (Oceanside, Calif.), Emma Preuschl (Indianapolis, Ind.), Andrew Johnson (Greenwich, Conn.) and Eric McDaniel (Weeki Wachee, Fla.) race next against Belarus, Spain, Brazil and Russia. The U.S. had the fastest time of the boats that did not qualify Monday. Three crews will advance to a Saturday semifinal.
Following the adaptive divisions will be the men’s double sculls. The U.S. team of Thomas Graves (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Peter Graves (Cincinnati, Ohio) will race Latvia, Norway and Czech Republic. Norway finished second in its heat, while the Graves brothers finished fifth. Two boats will advance to the Thursday semifinals.
The lightweight men’s four of Ryan Fox (Edgerton, Wis.), Will Daly (Vail, Colo.), Robin Prendes (Miami, Fla.) and Anthony Fahden (Lafayette, Calif.) will race Argentina, France, Switzerland and Russia. France reached the world cup podium this summer and will be a tough challenge, as will Russia, which finished second in its heat Sunday. Two boats will advance to Thursday’s semifinals.
In the women’s quadruple sculls, the crew of Megan Kalmoe (St. Croix Falls, Wis.), Adrienne Martelli (University Place, Wash.), Natalie Dell (Somerville, Mass.) and Stesha Carle (Long Beach, Calif.) will race Italy, Great Britain and China. The U.S. defeated Italy in the heat Sunday, but Great Britain rowed a faster time to qualify out of the heat. Two boats in the rep will advance to the Thursday final.
The men’s pair of Tom Peszek (Farmington Hills, Mich.) and Justin Stangel (Madison, Wis.) will row next against China, Egypt, The Netherlands and Czech Republic. The Netherlands enters the heat with the fastest time among the group from the Sunday heats. Two boats will advance to Friday’s semifinals.
The women’s double sculls of Kate Bertko (Oakland, Calif.) and Sarah Trowbridge (Guilford, Conn.) will finish up for the U.S., racing Ireland, Switzerland, Greece, Denmark and Lithuania. Bertko and Trowbridge have the best time of the heats in this race. Two boats will advance to the Friday semifinals.
