Regattas are still underway for juniors and masters, many of us are rowing several times a week, and some of us, like Mad Dogs and Englishmen, do go out in the mid-day sun.

During the past month, USRowing became aware of a potential safety issue related to boats using the C2 foot stretchers in replacement of shoes. While we understand the advantage that this provides to clubs with multiple sized rowers using the same equipment, we found there is substantial and grave risk that rowers wearing typical running and athletic shoes in these stretchers may become trapped should the boat capsize or sink.

When I first rowed in a sweep boat, archeological layers of duct tape were wrapped ‘round and ‘round the shabby, shredded shoes in the worn-out sectional eight. More tape than shoe. The frayed string pretended to be heel ties (when they were on).

It’s spring and teams are hitting the road and heading to regattas. Perhaps you have a really experienced trailer driver, or perhaps it is the gung-ho crew booster parent who said, “Sure, I’ll do it.” Perhaps they hauled a small trailer once and have great confidence. But hauling 65-foot-long boats is more like driving a very delicate bus.
