    Everyone’s heard the saying “Practice makes perfect,” but it doesn’t quite go far enough. Only perfect practice makes perfect, and when you’re trying to unlearn bad habits while also trying to learn a new habit, that takes even longer. Be patient with yourself, and make sure that when you do drills, don’t forget about the purpose of the drill when you stop. Instead work to incorporate the drill into your rowing.

    I understand there was some controversy from April’s article about early body preparation. I didn’t get the specifics, but I assume it had to do with our suggestion about moving the hands and body away together out of bow versus hands first, then body. I just want to preface that we did not invent this style or any style, we simply watch the videos of the Olympians and World Champions and teach what they’re doing.

    I’ve always believed that the one thing most every coach agrees on was the importance of early body preparation, but now I’m beginning to wonder. Granted, we haven’t seen a lot of rowers yet this season, but almost everyone we have seen has failed to get the body set by ½ slide and as a result, has then either lunged at the catch or simply approached the catch with less than optimum reach.

    I realize it’s rather cliché to be writing about goals and resolutions this time of year, but there’s a lot to be said for defining what you want to do so that you can figure out how to get there. In the past, I have had some amazing success with visualization, which is really just goal setting to a different degree. Figure out what your goals are, set up a plan to get there and then really try to see yourself succeeding.
