Coaching Development Course Overview and Upcoming Courses
Coaching education is part of the core mission of USRowing. Approximately 500 coaches go through our certification program every year. The Level 1 and 2 programs are an excellent way to introduce your coaches to more information that will help them be safer and more effective coaches.
To host a course, you need to provide a suitable space, ergs or rowing tanks, boats to rig and the core group of participants, we require a minimum of 10 participants. USRowing will provide an instructor, materials, handle all registration, finances and help advertise the clinic to rowing clubs in the region.
BENEFIT TO HOST
The host organization will get one free participant for 12 paid participants in the Level 2 courses. This is to encourage the host club to talk to local clubs to boost participation.
We try very hard to honor all reasonable requests for clinics, but due to location and/or scheduling conflicts with our instructors, we are occasionally unable to schedule a course in a specific location.
Level 1 is designed for someone who has never coached rowing before, such as a parent, teacher, or recent college grad. We recommend this program for coaches who will teaching “learn to row” programs. Currently, we are working on a delivery system for the Level 1.
Level 2 is a one and a half day program for a coach who has completed Level 1 or has been coaching for about a year or has rowed in college or at a club for four years. This program is the “bread and butter” of our coaching education program. It will train coaches who will be assistants and new head coaches at the high school and college level. USRowing provides an instructor to address the topics outlined in our manual.
Level 3 is for an experienced head coach or pre-elite coach. Sections of the program will be taught at the Annual Convention and at special clinics during the summer. This program will be expansive in scope and will require a significant commitment from the participant. To participate in the Level 3 you must have held your Level 2 (certificate) for two years or special permission from the Director of Coaching Development.

Below is the current list of courses. Please be aware that we add and, occasionally, have to cancel courses due to demand.
- The Level 2 course will be a day and a half day course. Level 1 course is a six-hour course. Typically if you have rowed for four years and will be coaching a program that will be racing, Level 2 is the appropriate course. The Level 1 course is waived for experienced rowers or coaches.
- To access the online manual and attend the course, registrants [participants] are required to have either an active Basic + Coaches Package or an active Championship membership and to have accepted the online release of liability [waiver]. Coaching manuals must be read, “activities” listed in the manual completed, and other materials must be reviewed prior to the course. We have put the coaching manuals online and when you register you will be sent an email with a pdf of the manual and information about the course. You will receive a paper copy when you arrive at the course. CPR, First Aid, Boating Safety, Safe Sport Training, Mentor hours and current USRowing membership are required for Level 1 and 2 certification. You do not have to obtain the certifications prior to the course. If you have copies, you may give them to the instructor or you can mail or email them later to Willie Black.
- For more information on rowing safety please visit our Safety Links page.
- Registration is done at RegattaCentral in the Camps and Clinics section, under the USRowing link at the bottom of the page. Registration will not be available until the dates are listed below. Registration closes three weeks (one week for Level 1) before the course to ensure that the coach has enough time to read and review the material. Payment for the course can be made on site by check (made out to “USRowing”), or paid online through RegattaCentral during the registration process.
