Safety Introduction

Safety is everyone’s responsibility.

Program directors need to ensure that a safety program has been systematically developed. Coaches need to be practicing the program and enforcing its rules. Finally, athletes need to be responsible for their station in the boat and being aware of what is going around them on the water and in the boathouse.

USRowing has provided documents (on the right side of this page) that may be helpful in developing or reviewing your safety program and web links to many other safety pages from other rowing clubs and other resources.

We encourage you to send USRowing information concerning safety that others in the community may find useful. When we receive information, we will update our links and/or put the information in the resource library.

Kippy Liddle Safety Kit

Any sport carries with it a unique set of challenges in the area of risk management. Rowing is certainly no exception. USRowing is pleased to offer the Kippy Liddle Safety Kit to member organizations to assist with the challenges facing the sport of rowing. Please click here for additional information and to order a safety kit.

About the Safety Committee

The USRowing Safety Committee is a national group of representatives from the rowing community, comprised of coaches, club administrators, regatta directors, referees and rowers.

The committee seeks to be a clearinghouse for safety concerns in the rowing community and a vehicle to share safety information between venues by posting rules of specific organizations on the USRowing website. The committee also is interested in gathering information on accidents which occur and seeks ways to make recommendations to minimize or eliminate those hazards.

Additionally, the committee will recommend any rule changes regarding safety issues to the USRowing Referee Commission.

For questions and to submit information for the safety links or the resource library, please contact USRowing staff liaison Willie Black at willieb@usrowing.org .
