Fifty-two student-athletes earned 2009-10 USRowing Scholastic Honor Roll honors and 52 student-athletes earned honorable mention scholastic honor roll accolades, the organization announced on Friday.
The USRowing Scholastic Honor Roll recognizes high school seniors who have excelled in both academics and rowing. Applicants must be USRowing members, have rowed or coxed at least one year, and successfully competed at or above the league or regional level. Overall, 292 student-athletes from 128 rowing clubs and schools across the country applied for the 2009-10 USRowing Scholastic Honor Roll, making it the largest pool of nominees in the history of the award.
The USRowing Youth Advisory Committee selected the recipients based on a ranking of their grade-point average in academic courses, performance on the ACT or SAT, and class rank. While fewer schools now rank their students, the nominees still included two students currently ranked as valedictorians, two currently ranked as salutatorians, and 19 others that have the maximum possible grade point average at their schools. One recipient earned a perfect score on the SAT, while several others earned a composite score of 35 out of a possible 36 on the ACT. In addition, one recipient was a member of the women’s eight that won the gold medal at the 2009 World Rowing Junior Championships.
USRowing is a nonprofit organization recognized by the United States Olympic Committee as the governing body for the sport of rowing in the United States.
