BATAVIA, Ohio – Long Beach Junior Crew’s Anastasia Alexander and Cristina Felix, who won gold in the women’s eight at the 2007 USRowing Youth National Championships, captured two more gold medals on Sunday to highlight the final day of competition at the 2008 USRowing Youth National Championships on Harsha Lake at East Fork State Park in Batavia, Ohio.
In the women’s double sculls final, Alexander and Felix crossed the line in a 7:33.81 to finish nearly seven seconds ahead of GMS Rowing Center, which clocked a 7:40.41. Albany Rowing Center won the bronze medal in a 7:43.65.
Three hours later, the duo joined Alex Cours and Taylor Vella, who were also members of last year’s winning eight, to take home the gold medal in the women’s quadruple sculls. The quartet finished with a time of 7:06.53, more than six seconds ahead of Marina Aquatic Center’s 7:12.77. New Canaan High School finished third in a 7:13.00.
In one of the closest races of the day, Newport Aquatic Center defeated St. Joseph’s Prep by 0.10 seconds to win the gold medal in the men’s eight. Newport finished in a 5:50.24, while St. Joseph’s clocked a 5:50.34. Winter Park High School came home with the bronze medal, finishing with a time of 5:53.41.
In the women’s eight, Marin Rowing Association defeated Los Gatos Rowing Club by a little more than three seconds to win the gold medal. Marin finished with a time of 6:33.66, while Los Gatos crossed the line in a 6:36.93. Phillips Exeter Academy won the bronze medal in a 6:37.39.
Two local crews came home with gold medals. In the women’s lightweight four with coxswain, Cincinnati Country Day School defeated Long Beach Junior Crew to win the gold medal. County Day finished with a time of 7:29.26, while Long Beach finished with a time of 7:35.00. Capital Crew took the bronze medal in a 7:36.12.
In the final of the men’s four with coxswain, Cincinnati Junior Rowing Club recorded a 1.2-second victory over Blair Academy. CJRC finished with a time of 6:33.36, while Blair clocked a 6:34.56. Noble and Greenough School finished third.
In the men’s single sculls, St. Mary’s Preparatory’s Ian Silveira won the gold medal by a little more than four seconds, crossing the finish line in a 7:25.30. GMS Rowing Center’s Kynan Reelick finished second in a 7:29.85, followed by Chesapeake Boat Club’s John Busche in a 7:36.70.
Lake Union Crew’s Cara Linnenkohl pulled away from Pittsford Crew’s Emily Eiffert over the final 500 meters to win the women’s single sculls by nearly seven seconds. Linnenkohl clocked an 8:18.60, with Eiffert finishing in an 8:25.38. Dublin Crew’s Shifumi Terasaka finished third in an 8:37.26.
Tempe Junior Crew’s Chris Erhart and Sydney Sutton-Liswith won the lightweight women’s double sculls by nearly seven seconds. The duo crossed the line in a 7:59.54, ahead of Shenendehowa High School. Shenendehowa finished with a time of 8:06.37 to win the silver medal, followed by Swan Creek Rowing Club in an 8:14.29.
In the lightweight men’s double sculls, Miami Beach Rowing Club held off Sarasota Crew to win the gold medal. Miami Beach clocked a 6:55.30 to finish 0.23 seconds ahead of its cross-state rivals. Albany Rowing Center finished third in a 6:58.19.
In the men’s double sculls, Shaker Rowing Association recorded a 6.36-second victory over Lake Oswego Community Rowing. Shaker came home in a 6:46.30, with Lake Oswego finishing in a 6:52.66. Sarasota Crew edged out Saugatuck Rowing Club by 0.11 seconds to win the bronze medal in a 6:54.28.
Lake Union Crew crossed the finish line in a 6:42.60 to win the men’s lightweight four with coxswain by 3.54 seconds over San Diego Rowing Club. San Diego held off Oakland Strokes and Monsignor Bonner High School by 0.49 seconds for the silver. Oakland and Bonner finished in a dead heat for third place with an identical time of 6:46.63.
In the women’s lightweight eight, Los Gatos Rowing Club recorded a four-second victory to win the gold medal. Los Gatos finished with a time of 6:53.45, with Community Rowing, Inc., taking the silver medal in a 6:57.66. West Side Rowing Club won the bronze medal with a time of 7:00.82.
Everett Rowing Association won the men’s lightweight eight by just over four seconds. Everett finished with a time of 6:02.67, while McCallie School clocked a 6:06.70 to finish second. St. Joseph’s Prep finished third in a 6:08.63 to take home the bronze medal.
In the women’s four with coxswain, Noble and Greenough ended Peddie School’s two-year hold on the title with a 4.22-second victory over the defending champions. Noble and Greenough finished with a time of 7:23.50, while Peddie clocked a 7:27.72. Newport Aquatic Center finished third in a 7:28.01.
In the men’s quadruple sculls, Malvern Preparatory School returned to the top of the medal stand after a one-year absence. Malvern clocked a 6:13.30 to finish nearly six seconds ahead of Lake Stevens Rowing Club. Lake Stevens finished with a time of 6:19.05, followed by Maritime Rowing Club in a 6:19.10.
Hosted by Cincinnati Junior Rowing Club, this weekend’s regatta featured more than 1,300 participants.
