WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – Two victorious men’s crews met national team qualifying standards during Sunday’s finals at the third 2006 National Selection Regatta (NSR) at the Finn M.W. Caspersen Rowing Center on Lake Mercer.
With the third NSR serving as a possible selection event for the men’s pair, men’s double sculls, and lightweight men’s double sculls, Sunday’s winners had the opportunity to be automatically selected to the 2006 National Team if they met the required time standard.
In the men’s pair, Princeton Training Center’s Josh Inman and Brett Newlin easily won the final. The duo built a three-second lead at the midway point of the race and continued to pull away from the rest of the field during the final 1,000 meters. Inman and Newlin crossed the finish line with a time of 6:37.79, 4.60 seconds ahead of PTC teammates Sam Burns and Dan Beery. PTC’s Chris Liwski and Michael Blomquist finished third in a 6:43.81. Inman and Newlin met the qualifying time standard and now have until July 12 to accept the men’s pair berth on the national team. If they choose not to accept the berth, the men’s pair would be opened up to all competitors at the 2006 World Championships Trials scheduled for July 31-August 5.
Princeton Training Center’s Wyatt Allen and Matt Hughes won the men’s double sculls final by 2.33 seconds and met the qualifying standard in the process. The duo built a three-second advantage during the first half of the race and then maintained a comfortable lead the rest of the way down the course. Allen and Hughes finished with a time of 6:23.67, while PTC teammates Sam Stitt and J. Sloan DuRoss clocked a 6:26.00. Vesper Boat Club’s Shane O’Mara and Jonathan Burns finished third in a 6:32.88. Allen and Hughes have until July 12 to accept the men’s double national team berth. If they choose not to accept the berth, the event would be opened up to all competitors at the world championships trials.
In the lightweight men’s double sculls, Undine Barge Club’s Dan Urevick-Ackelsburg and Cody Lowry defeated the Penn Athletic Club/Potomac Boat Club duo of Bjorn Larsen and Andrew Liverman by 4.57 seconds. The Undine duo clocked a 6:34.48. The Penn AC/Malta Boat Club duo of Evan Price and Shane Madden finished third with a time of 6:46.14. Urevick-Ackelsburg and Lowry missed the time standard in order to automatically qualify for this year’s national team, however. They have until July 12 to meet that standard or the lightweight men’s double will be opened up to all competitors at the trials.
The remaining races served as an opportunity for crews to test their speed in preparation for upcoming selection camps and trials.
In the lightweight men’s pair, the PTC/New York Athletic Club combination of Simon Carcagno and Matt Muffelman raced to a 2.33-second victory over teammates Tom Paradiso and Rich Montgomery. The PTC/NYAC duo of Andrew Bolton and Collin Farrell finished third. Paradiso and Montgomery held a 0.38-second lead over Bolton and Farrell at the midway point of race, with Carcagno and Muffelman sitting in third place 0.28-seconds behind. However, Carcagno and Muffelman were able to overcome the slight deficit in the last half of the race.
Princeton Training Center’s Liane Malcos and Lia Pernell won the women’s double sculls final by more than three seconds. Malcos and Pernell clocked a 7:05.32 to finish 3.24 seconds ahead of the Saugatuck Rowing Club/PTC duo of Ala Piotrowski and Jennifer Kaido. PTC’s Anne Browning and Caryn Davies finished third in a time of 7:10.26.
Princeton Training Center’s Anna Mickelson and Megan Cooke clocked a 7:24.73 to win the women’s pair final by 0.64 seconds over teammates Anna Goodale and Lindsay Shoop. The winning duo trailed by 0.53 seconds at the midway point of the race before edging out a victory.
