Pan American Games Quotes July 17

Ruth Stiver (Madisonville, Texas) – Bronze Medal, Women’s Pair

“It is the first international medal for me. It’s a great honor to be here and to be racing. It was a really tight race, and we were happy to get third. Canada and Chile raced a great race, and Cuba was definitely pushing us.”

On Rio: “This is my first time here, and Jen’s first time here, and we think this city is amazing. We’ve had a wonderful time so far. We have gone up the mountain to see the Tijuca Park – the forest. It was beautiful and we saw lots of monkeys.

“The race course here is amazing. It’s just so great to look up and see the Redeemer – that makes every race great.”

Patrick O’Dunne (Nazareth, Pa.) – Silver Medal, Men’s Pair

“It was a really tough race and it really came down to the wire. Canada was very good and they were the clear winners, but we fought for silver and we thought it was a really great race on our part despite the water.”

On the water: “It was good the first half, it got a little more windy toward the back, but you have to deal with it.”

On the wind: “It wasn’t a big problem, but it was a factor for everyone out there. It’s very fair. There wasn’t one lane that was easier than another.”

Dan Beery (Oaktown, Ind.) – Silver Medal, Men’s Pair

“It was a very close race – I think we slipped back to fourth at one point – and we were really lucky to sneak back in. Canada took a lot out of us – they really moved for the second part of the first 500 meters, and we never really recovered from there.”

Rich Montgomery (Batavia, Ill.) – Silver Medal, Lightweight Men’s Double Sculls

“It was a good race. It’s hard to finish second – it will take a little while before it really sinks in that we got silver. But, it was a good race.”

On the silver medal: “It’s my first international medal. If I get a medal every time, I’ll be very happy.”

On the venue: “The venue is outstanding. The Brazilians have done a great job – CO-RIO should be commended.”

Andrew Liverman (Oakton, Va.), Silver Medal, Lightweight Men’s Double Sculls

On the conditions: “It was actually beautiful conditions – it was kind of windy in the morning and it calmed down.”
