Six Crews Named to 2014 U.S. Under 23 National Team at Mercer Lake

June 24, 2014

Finals in Seventeen Events Set for Wednesday at the Senior and Under 23 World Championships Trials

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – Six of the crews that will represent the United States at the 2014 World Rowing Under 23 Championships July 23-27, in Varese, Italy were named on the first day of finals Tuesday. Racing continues Wednesday at the combined Senior 1 and Under 23 World Championship Trials on Mercer Lake with finals in nine events at the under 23 level and eight events at the senior level.

In the final of the under 23 women’s double sculls, GMS Rowing Center’s Margaret Bertasi, a two-time junior national team member, and Zoe Fleischmann dominated the race. Bertasi and Fleischmann took their stroke rate up in the last 500 meters to finish more than 10 seconds ahead of Craftsbury’s Amy Ludovici and Katherine Miller with a time of 7:21.97.

In the under 23 men’s single sculls, Seattle Rowing Center’s Ben Davison won his final to earn a berth on the U.S. Under 23 National Team. Davison, coming off of two gold medals at the 2014 USRowing Youth Nationals Championships less than two weeks ago, finished sixth in the event at the 2013 World Rowing Junior Championships.

“It’s been a great season so far; I’ve accomplished a lot,” said Davison. “I’ve made a lot of improvements and made a big step forward this year. I’m really happy with the progress and I hope to keep moving forward.

“The long-term goal is just to reach as high as I can possibly go. The goal this year is to go to U23 and do well and go to junior worlds and do well.”

Davsion led off the start in his race, with Vesper Boat Club’s Patrick DelBarba putting on a big move at the 1,250-meter mark. At the line, it was Davison across first in a 7:12.02, with DelBarba trailing by just more than three seconds with a time of 7:15.23.

Cambridge Boat Club’s Andrew Campbell won the under 23 lightweight men’s single sculls final with ease. The seven-time national team member crossed the finish line in a 7:21.19 over Sean Fanning’s 7:39.16.

Campbell, who finished seventh in the event at the 2013 World Rowing Championships, won his heat Monday in the senior lightweight single sculls and returns Wednesday to compete for a spot on the 2014 U.S. Senior National Team that will compete August 24-31 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Unaffiliated/Vesper Boat Club’s Christopher Wales and Matthew Maddamma won the final of the under 23 lightweight men’s double sculls in 6:49.34 over Undine Barge Club’s Oliver Ingram and Fenner’s 6:56.41.

“It was a little bumpy off the start,” said Wales, who finished sixth in the men’s quad at the 2013 World Rowing Junior Championships. “We had a cross-wind, but everyone had that. We just kind of rowed our own race and took control. It was a good piece for us.”

“This was the first race; we’ve been together about a week,” said Maddamma, who represented the U.S. in the event at last year’s World Rowing Under 23 Championships. “It was a pretty solid piece.”

California Rowing Club sprinted strong in the final stretch to take the under 23 lightweight women’s quadruple sculls final. The crew of Christine Cavallo, Alia Shafi, Emma Betuel and Brittany Presten clocked a 6:59.57 over Vesper Boat Club for the win.

In the first final of the day, the under 23 men’s quadruple sculls, the OKC Riversport crew of Jackson Anderson, Carson Green, Stephen George and Matthew Nelson raced uncontested and completed the course in 6:18.83.

More than 100 entries from 37 clubs across the country have come to compete this week for a chance to row for the U.S. teams at either the World Rowing Under 23 Championships July 23-27, in Varese, Italy, and the 2014 World Rowing Championships August 24-31 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Racing continues tomorrow at 7:30 a.m. with finals for the remaining under 23 and senior boat categories. For more information including an updated schedule and full senior and under 23 event results, click here.
