Temple to Host Annual Coxswain Clinic
December 06, 2012
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The 10th annual Temple University Coxswains’ Clinic is scheduled for February 2, 2013. Sponsored by Nielsen-Kellerman, the clinic will feature 2009 world champion coxswain Katelin Snyder and nine-time national team and Beijing Olympic bronze medalist Marcus McElhenney.
The clinic is set to take place in the Kiva Auditorium on the Temple campus and will cover safety, steering, motivation, racing as well as other aspects of the coxswain position. In addition to the clinic, small group sessions with Snyder and McElhenney will take place from 2:00-5:00 p.m.
"Each year it is great to see how receptive the young coxswains are to the information and stories that the National Team coxswains tell,” said Temple University men’s coach Gavin White. "We receive very positive feedback from many of our participants, especially with regards to the small group sessions where each participant gets lots of face time with the speakers."
Snyder, an assistant rowing coach at Loyola Marymount University, won a gold medal at the 2009 World Championships in Poznan. She also won gold medals in 2006 and 2008, and bronze in 2007 at the World Rowing Under 23 Championships.
McElhenney, who has been a member of nine U.S. teams, won a bronze medal in the men’s eight at the 2008 Olympics Games, gold in the men’s pair with coxswain at the 2009 World Rowing Championships and, most recently, coxed the U.S. men’s eight to a gold medal at the 2011 Pam American Games.
"I can see the confidence on the kids faces when the national team coxswains give them positive feedback on their audiotapes,” said White. “Every coxswain and coach that attends the clinic comes away with something that will give them a perceived edge on their competition this season. That includes the fourteen year old kids, all the way up to the collegiate and masters level competitors."
All ages and experience levels are welcome to attend. Register online at www.regattacentral.com. Items to be raffled include a complete NK New Cox-Box System, NK Strokewatch, NK gear bag and NK waist pack. Contact Gavin White at email@example.com with questions.
