USRowing Announces World Rowing Senior and Junior Championships Roster

PRINCETON, N.J. – USRowing is pleased to announce the athletes that will represent the United States at the 2012 World Rowing Senior and Junior Championships. The combined events, run together only during an Olympic year to accommodate senior boat classes not contested at the Olympics, and will take place Aug. 14-19, in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.

World champions will be crowned in seven events at the senior level including the lightweight men’s single sculls, lightweight women’s single sculls, lightweight men’s pair, men’s pair with coxswain, lightweight women’s quadruple sculls, lightweight men’s quadruple sculls and lightweight men’s eight. Senior team athletes competing in the world championships were selected during trials conducted in June at Lake Mercer in West Windsor, N.J.

Of the 22 athletes competing for the U.S. in the senior non-Olympic events, nine are returning from performances at the 2011 World Rowing Championships on Lake Bled, Slovenia. The U.S. won four medals last summer including gold in the women’s eight and four, silver in the quadruple sculls and bronze in the lightweight women’s quad.

Among the returning athletes are Andrew Campbell (New Canaan, Conn.), who will row the lightweight men’s single after finishing fourth in the event last year, Ursula Grobler (Pretoria, South Africa) returning to the lightweight women’s single, who was also fourth last summer in the event; Will Daly (Vail, Colo.), who is rowing in the lightweight men’s pair and was in the lightweight men’s four that finished 13th in Slovenia; Hillary Saeger (Dedham, Mass.) and Lindsey Hochman (Seattle, Wash.), who both return to the lightweight women’s quad after taking bronze in 2011; Sam Cunningham (Pittsburgh, Pa.), and Shane Madden (Ambler, Pa.), who return to the event after finishing fifth on Lake Bled, and Justin Stangel (Madison, Wis.) and Blaise Didier (San Francisco, Calif.) in the men’s pair with coxswain. Stangel was in the men’s pair that finished ninth in Slovenia and Didier rowed in the men’s pair with coxswain that finished sixth.

At the junior level, world champions will be crowned in 13 events including the men’s single sculls, women’s single sculls, men’s pair, women’s pair, men’s double sculls, women’s double sculls, men’s quadruple sculls, women’s quadruple sculls, women’s four, men’s four with coxswain, men’s eight and women’s eight. Junior national team athletes competing in the world championships were chosen by trials in six events: men’s single sculls, women’s single sculls, men’s double sculls, women’s double sculls, men’s pair, women’s pair. The athletes who will compete in non-trials events were selected by coach evaluations and performances at USRowing selection camps.

Of the 42 junior athletes on the team, six return from the squad that took back one gold medal and one bronze from the 2011 World Rowing Junior Championships in Eton, England. The U.S. won gold in the women’s junior four and bronze in the women’s junior eight.

Returning from last year are Sam Helms (Snohomish, Wash), who was in the men’s junior four with coxswain that finished eighth, Patrick Eble (Fort Washington, Pa.), who rowed in the eight that finished fifth, Rosie Grinalds (Southport, Conn.) who was in the women’s pair that finished sixth, Mia Croonquist (Vashon, Wash), Deirdre Fitzpatrick (Cheshire, Conn.) and MacKenzi Sherman (Los Alamitos, Calif.).
