June 22, 2012
PRINCETON, N.J. – The 2012 Under 23 World Championship Trials are set to begin Tuesday, June 26 on Mercer Lake, in West Windsor, N.J.
Racing will be contested in 15 boats classes for athletes who hope to earn a spot on the team that will represent the United States at the 2012 World Rowing Under 23 Championships in Trakai, Lithuania.
Among the events featured will be the men’s four with coxswain, the women’s four, lightweight men’s and women’s quadruple sculls, men’s and women’s double sculls, men’s and women’s pair, lightweight men’s and women’s double sculls, men’s and women’s single sculls and lightweight men’s and women’s single sculls.
In all, 64 crews will compete June 26-27. Racing will begin Tuesday morning with time trials in the men’s and women’s double, men’s and women’s pair, the men’s and women’s single and the lightweight men’s and women’s single, with the top four boats advancing to the final on Wednesday.
Listed to row in one of the largest subscribed events, the men’s pair, the University of Wisconsin/Stanford entry of Austin Hack, (Old Lyme, Conn.) and Dariush Aghai (Skokie, Ill.) will make its second attempt at making a 2012 United States National Team this month. Hack and Aghai rowed in the 2012 Olympic Trials – Rowing, advancing to the semifinal.
Rowing in the women’s double sculls event will be University of Virginia teammates Cara Linnenkohl (Redman, Wash.) and Carli Goldberg (Sarasota, Fla.). Both women were members of the Virginia squad that captured the 2012 NCAA Championships title. At last summer’s USRowing Club National Championships, the duo won both the intermediate and senior women’s double events. Both were also members of U.S. junior national teams.
The USRowing under 23 teams serve as a development level for athletes aspiring to become senior team athletes. Last year at the World Rowing Under 23 Championships in Amsterdam, the U.S. won four medals including gold in the men’s eight and women’s pair, silver in the women’s eight and bronze in the lightweight men’s single sculls.
