U.S. Crews to Compete at Henley Royal Regatta

June 15, 2012

PRINCETON, N.J. – When the Henley Royal Regatta at Henley-on-Thames begins on June 27, crews from 41 United States clubs and universities will be in England to compete.

Among those scheduled to compete is New York Athletic Club’s Jamie Koven, (Green Village, N.J.), a two-time Olympian, nine-time United States team member and three-time Henley champion in the Grand Challenge Cup (1994, 1995) and the Diamond Challenge Sculls (1998.) Koven is slated to compete in the The Silver Goblets & Nickalls' Challenge Cup, the men’s pair event, with Michael Blomquist (Greensboro, N.C.), a five-time national team member.

Rowing the single in the Diamond Challenge Sculls is two-time Head of the Charles champion Michael Sivigny (Somersworth, N.H.).

Also rowing in the Diamond Sculls is Andrew Campbell, (New Canaan, Conn.), a United States national team lightweight sculler. Campbell, rowing for the Cambridge Boat Club, finished fourth at last year's world championships in Bled, Slovenia.  Campbell and 2008 Olympian Will Daly, finished third in the lightweight double at the 2012 Olympic qualifying regatta, but did not qualify to row at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

Koven who is also a Henley steward, competed this week in the 2012 Olympic Trials – Rowing in a pair with Blomquist, but did not make the final.

“In my duties as a steward, this is a great set of entries from the U.S. We have very strong support from the high school level and the college level and from some developing athletes, like myself,” Koven said.

“It’s a record entries of overseas crews, the U.S. from Australia and a bunch of other countries, mostly at the under 23 and lightweight levels, so Henley should be a lot of fun this year. As for me, Mike Blomquist and I decided we wanted to have one last go in the pair and so we’re going to race in the Silver Goblets.

“The competition will be stiff, a lot of under 23 crews, a lot of young guys and we’ll be the old guys. We’ll have fun and see what happens.”
