Final Weekend for 2012 USRowing Junior District Championships

May 17, 2012

PRINCETON, N.J. – On the final weekend for USRowing youth district championships, hundreds of junior athletes will go to the line on both sides of the country in search of medals and a chance to compete at the 2012 USRowing Youth National Championships.

Both the 2012 Northwest Junior Regional Championships and the USRowing Northeast Junior District Championships will be held May 18-20 in Vancouver, Wash., and on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass.

The largest of the district championships – the Northwest – will be a three-day event held on Vancouver Lake and will see more than 600 crews from 24 clubs compete. “It’s our biggest regatta yet; we broke our record once again with the amount of entries,” said James Rawson, USRowing Northwest Programs Coordinator.

“We have will over 600 entries from the Northwest region and we’ve added 200 more athletes to the region this year. It’s going to be big. It’s going to be exciting. We’re going to get some good racing in and we’re all excited.”

While the Northeast championship is not nearly as large, it is by no means a small event. Three hundred and fifty crews from 34 clubs are scheduled to race.

Championship crews in varsity events from both regattas will earn the right to race at the 2012 USRowing Youth National Championships June 8-10 on Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn. More than 1,500 athletes from high school and junior rowing programs from across the country will be competing for national titles in 18 boat classes.
