Lucas McGee Named USRowing’s Men’s Under 23 Coordinator for 2012
October 31, 2011
University of Washington men’s freshmen coach Lucas McGee has been named USRowing’s Men’s Under 23 Coordinator for 2012, the organization announced on Monday.
The under 23 coordinator, which will rotate every one to two years, will oversee the identification and selection process of USRowing’s men’s under 23 program. The coordinator will work closely with collegiate and club programs, along with the senior national team coaching staff, through this process.
“I’m really pleased that Luke will be able to help us out in this role,” said Matt Imes, USRowing High Performance Director. “We really want to strengthen our connection with the colleges and clubs in establishing staffs for the camps and subsequent world under 23 championships. Along with this, we want to create good development opportunities for athletes with national team aspirations. Luke’s success as a coach and athlete fits well with this role.”
During his four years as freshmen coach at the University of Washington, McGee has led his crews to a pair of gold medals (2009, 2010) and a pair of silver medals (2008, 2011) at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships, as well as three Pac-10 Conference championships. In 2010, McGee’s freshman boat went undefeated, which included a victory in the Temple Challenge Cup at the Henley Royal Regatta.
McGee was a six-time national team member, having competed at the junior, under 23 and senior national team levels. In 2003, he stroked the men’s four with coxswain to a gold medal at the world championships in Milan, Italy. He also won medals at two under 23 championships, including gold in the eight in 1999 and bronze in the eight in 2000. McGee started his international racing career with a silver medal in the eight at the 1997 World Rowing Junior Championships.
McGee is a 2001 graduate of Brown University and attended Oxford University for his graduate studies. He won an Eastern Sprints title in 2000 and helped Oxford defeat Cambridge in The Boat Race in 2002. He is married to 2008 Olympian Portia McGee.
