Rowing with the inside arm only is a good drill for placement and length. When rowing with the inside arm, we like to see good preparation of the body from the finish followed by full extension of the inside arm, while staying “relaxed.” The drive phase of the stroke with the inside arm will be with less pressure but still connected. (Avoid too much pressure that leads to the shooting of the tail.) When placing the outside hand, a concentrated effort should be made to keep the length and placement that was established with the inside arm only.
