2018 Fan’s Choice – Masters Coach of the Year

Now in their eighth year, the USRowing Fan’s Choice Awards recognize excellence in rowing across seven categories and are an important part of USRowing’s longstanding tradition of bestowing awards for superior performances and contributions to the success of our sport.

This year, the rowing community put forth strong nominees for the 2018 USRowing Fan’s Choice Awards. After receiving an outpouring of nominations in all categories, USRowing is proud to announce the 2018 Masters Coach of the Year finalists.

Fans may vote once in each category. Voting closes at 11:59 p.m. E.T. on Tuesday, November 27. Awardees will be announced on Wednesday, November 28.

Who can become Coach of the Year? A rowing coach who has achieved extraordinary success in 2018. Success may be defined as outstanding performance, having a breakout year, making a significant impact on an individual athlete or team performance, perseverance in spite of difficult odds, consistent strong performance, a combination of the above or other worthy measures.

About the Finalists

Patrick Kington, San Diego Rowing Club – In his first year as head coach of San Diego Rowing Club, Kington helped guide his program to a team points victory at the 2018 USRowing Masters National Championships, while also serving as head coach for the SDRC junior women’s program. His outgoing personality and enthusiasm has encouraged former rowers to pick up their blades once again and set to the water.

Kirk Lang, Western Reserve Rowing Association – This is Lang’s eighth year as head coach for WRRA. This year, he led WRRA to the Team Points Trophy at the 2018 Head of the Hooch along with numerous qualifications for the Head of the Charles. Lang has always been willing to roll up his sleeves and go above and beyond for his program. Coordinating practices on a busy, ever turning river, members have recounted stories of Lang jumping in and coxing boats when the club is in need in order for practice to move forward.

Lisa Lounsbery, Atomic Rowing – Lounsbery has brought the Atomic Rowing masters to many successes after two years of coaching and only four years of rowing. Under her direction in 2018, her team broke personal bests at the Tennessee Indoor Championships and won four golds at the USRowing Southeast Masters Regional Championships. She also coached novice athletes to two gold medals at World Rowing Masters Regatta.

Tom Woodman, Sammamish Rowing Association – Woodman’s efficiency, organization and level-headedness on and off the water is a large part of SRA’s success. On the water, his crews have won medals at the largest regattas in the U.S. At the 2018 San Diego Crew Classic, almost all of his boats finished top three, with a few securing wins.

Award voting is intended to be one vote per person from among the extended rowing community and their family and friends; in the event of electronic, hired, or other similar ballot-stuffing attempts, affected votes may be deleted and nominees potentially disqualified.
