2018 Fan’s Choice – Junior Athlete of the Year
Now in their eighth year, the USRowing Fan’s Choice Awards recognize excellence in rowing across seven categories and are an important part of USRowing’s longstanding tradition of bestowing awards for superior performances and contributions to the success of our sport.
This year, the rowing community put forth strong nominees for the 2018 USRowing Fan’s Choice Awards. After receiving an outpouring of nominations in all categories, USRowing is proud to announce the 2018 Junior Athlete of the Year finalists.
Fans may vote once in each category. Voting closes at 11:59 p.m. E.T. on Tuesday, November 27. Awardees will be announced on Wednesday, November 28.
Who can become Athlete of the Year? A male or female rower or coxswain who has achieved extraordinary success in 2018. Success may be defined as an outstanding performance, having a breakout year, perseverance in spite of difficult odds, consistent strong performance, outstanding service off the water, a combination of the above or other worthy measures.
About the Finalists
Delaney Evans, Y Quad Cities – Starting with winning the junior lightweight title at the World Rowing Indoor Championships, Evans had a very successful 2018. Winning gold medals in the double and quad at the 2018 USRowing Youth National Championships, she would go on to win the Diamond Jubilee Cup at the Royal Henley Regatta, a first for American crews. A member of the 2018 U.S. Under 19 National Team in the women’s quad, she also won her second consecutive title in the youth double at the Head of the Charles.
Lucy Koven, Greenwich Crew – A pivotal member of Greenwich Crew, Koven spent the summer winning trials and competing both nationally and internationally in the U.S. U19 women’s pair. She and teammate Caitlin Esse won a silver medal at the 2018 World Rowing Junior Championships.
Kelsey McGinley, Saugatuck Rowing Club – A USRowing Youth National Champion in the women’s eight for three consecutive years with Saugatuck Rowing Club (‘16-’18), McGinley went on to represent the U.S. winning a gold medal in the women’s four at the 2018 World Rowing Junior Championships. She is now in her freshman year at Stanford University and recently won the varsity eight at the 2018 Head of the Charles.
Richard Reid, Oakland Strokes – Named Oakland Strokes’ Most Improved Athlete of the Year, Reid was a member of the crew that won the lightweight eight title at the 2018 USRowing Youth National Championships.
Award voting is intended to be one vote per person from among the extended rowing community and their family and friends; in the event of electronic, hired, or other similar ballot-stuffing attempts, affected votes may be deleted and nominees potentially disqualified.
