Vote for the 2016 Junior Athlete of the Year

USRowing maintains a long tradition of rewarding excellence in rowing. Following a year of unprecedented achievement, the rowing community put forth strong nominees for the 2016 USRowing Fan’s Choice Awards. After receiving an outpouring of nominations in all categories, USRowing is proud to announce the 2016 junior athlete finalists.

Fans may vote once in each category. Voting closes at midnight E.T. on Monday, October 17. Awardees will be announced on Wednesday, October 19.

Who can become Athlete of the Year? A male or female rower or coxswain who has achieved extraordinary success in 2016. Success may be defined as an outstanding performance, having a breakout year, perseverance in spite of difficult odds, consistently strong performance, outstanding service off the water, or a combination of the above or other worthy measures.

 

About the Finalists:

Michael Cuellar, Oakland Strokes

Michael Cuellar won gold in the eight at both the San Diego Crew Classic and the 2016 USRowing Youth National Championships. At the World Rowing Junior Championships, he won silver in the men’s eight behind Germany.

Emily Delleman, Y Quad Cities

Y Quad Cities’ Emily Delleman is a three-time national team member who had an outstanding 2016 campaign. A gold medalist at USRowing’s Youth and Club Nationals, Delleman went on to win gold for the U.S. in the women’s double sculls at the 2016 World Rowing Junior Championships, the first medal the United States had ever won in this event.

Ben F. Gilbert III, Belen Jesuit Preparatory

Ben F. Gilbert was named the Belen Jesuit Preparatory Athlete of the Year in 2016 after helping lead the crew to an undefeated season. Gilbert and his teammates of the lightweight eight took gold at the Southeast Youth Regionals, SRAA Scholastic Championships and the USRowing Youth Nationals.

Grace McGinley, Saugatuck Rowing Club

Grace McGinley had an undefeated season in 2016, winning every regatta including the San Diego Crew Classic and a national title in the varsity eight with Saugatuck Rowing Club. She currently holds two world records for her age group in the 5k and 2k erg time and finished fifth in the eight at the 2016 World Rowing Junior Championships.

David Orner, Jr.Maritime Rowing Club

David Orner, Jr., served as team captain for Maritime Rowing Club and earned a first-place finish in the men’s quadruple sculls at the USRowing Youth National Championships. His success continued on the international stage in the quad, bringing home the United States’ first medal, a bronze, in the event at the 2016 World Rowing Junior Championships.

 

Award voting is intended to be one vote per person from among the extended rowing community and their family and friends; in the event of electronic, hired, or other similar ballot-stuffing attempts, affected votes may be deleted and nominees potentially disqualified.
